So much has happened in my little NJ studio

Hey everyone! Sorry for the lack of updates lately, but believe me its kind of a good thing. I have been super busy recording and mixing down a number of EP’s and full length records for local new jersey bands.

I finally finished up the record for Post No Bills and the master sounds awesome. I think they are getting it pressed soon. I also finished a 5 song ep for a great local band called The Turnbucklers. That record I mastered myself and it came out pretty good. Both bands were awesome to have in my recording studio and I couldnt be happier with the sounds that we were able to get out.

Finally, I am working on a full length record for some really good friends of mine who call themselves The Somerville Town Drunks. Great record and a great band. We finished tracking the entire 12 song full length in just under 24 hours. Now its on to mixing.

After this, I am working with a band called Whack to finish up their 5 song EP.

Things have been moving along great, we have some new gear on the way and there are whispers of moving the basement studio to somewhere a little bigger and nicer in new jersey… but thats just a rumor right now…

New Board, New Software

After a 3 hour long drive up to Albany, NY I was able to pick up a new board for the studio. Being lost in Albany was not fun, but it was totally worth the trip. I brought home a Soundcraft Ghost.

This is an amazing piece of gear with a little history to it. I won’t give it all away here though ;). I am also upgrading to protools 8. I figure PT is the way to go to cut expense and be more productive in sessions.

Now I just need to book some bands…..

Studio Sessions and Upgrades

Now that I have had the time to work on a few projects, one really exciting project for a bunch of local guys that call themselves Post No Bills, I have decided to make some changes to the recording gear and methods. I was pushing an all analog recording environment, but its just proving to be too time consuming and not very cost effective.

I am selling my HD24 and going with a full protools rig. I feel this will be better because I will have the ability to undo punches and much more easily setup various takes of the same song. The only thing thats a bummer is that I will be limited to 16 I/O channels for analog mixing. I dont think its that detrimental though, really we tracked their entire full length in around 16 tracks. I can also track and mix digital with 16 analog inserts. The possiblities are endless. I will need to rewire the board, -which I am also replacing- going with a TOFT ATB24 instead of the eurodesk. It was a cheap impulse buy that I know regret.

Anyway enough rambling.  I will be adding the ability to schedule sessions on the site soon. I am finish up the PNB full length the working on a EP for “The Bonus Brothers”. After that I will be taking on projects so check back soon!

First Session Success

After plugging in roughly 200 cables, mounting 20 pieces of rack gear,  and setting up 4 patchbays the studio had its first successful session on Saturday and Sunday.

A few of my good friends came down and help me debug the wiring and run a few recording takes on drums and guitars. Everything went smoothly with the exception of a few misalligned patch configurations. We are now well on our way to recording bliss. I think a few more sessions where I can really play around with the room sounds will definitely do me some good.

Besides that I am very happy with the progress :)

Trying to finish the acoustic treatment

Well, I am working out the last of the acoustic treatments tonight for the live rooms. I am going to have my good friend come over and bang on some omnidirectional noise generating devices (drums) to see if I can’t terminate some standing waves that will affect the recordings.

Last 4 items on the list: lights, air circulator, studio desk,  and the bass closet.  Very close…

I am starting to book bands now so give me a call or shoot me an email to get some time locked in.
